The wonderful old saying prescribes, “Act as if the quality you seek is already within you and it will be.” I think that wisdom holds just as true when it comes to how we interact with our students. I find that if I treat students as if they are acting the way I want them to act, often they will.

Dr. Boonshaft is the author of the critically acclaimed best-selling books Teaching Music with Passion, Teaching Music with Purpose, and Teaching Music with Promise. Dr. Boonshaft is currently on the faculty of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, where he is Professor of Music and Director of Bands.
