I had a dream the other night that we, as music teachers, were completely insulated from budget reductions, and staff and program cuts. In short, we had it made, never to worry about advocacy for music education ever again. It was wonderful. It was beautiful. It was also a dream. Sometimes having to worry about advocating for our programs can seem like trying to hold back the ocean with a broom. But when you start to feel overwhelmed, even a bit defeated, just remember that in the United States, more students are involved in music than in all sports put together. It’s true. It is also a very powerful expression of the immensely profound impact music has on students, schools, and communities. Let’s make sure we broadcast that fact far and wide, loud and clear.
