Sometimes the effectiveness of our teaching, and of our students’ learning, can rest in our ability to recognize the difference between compliance and understanding. When a student does something, it is often that they simply complied with our directions. They did what we asked them to do. But did they understand the concept, rule, or technique they did? Getting a group of students in an ensemble to do something is pretty easy and can take very little time. Getting that same group to understand that thing is a much greater task demanding more time, patience, and skill. But that distinction can mean the difference between having to tell students something over and over and over, versus them truly understanding when, why, and how it should be done. Is that always easy? No. Is it always worth the time and effort? Absolutely!
