Though I doubt we could ever agree on the hardest aspects of being a teacher, I think overcoming a student’s feeling that a goal is impossible, simply because they haven’t achieved it yet, must number high on that list. On those occasions, a healthy dose of our making the steps along that path smaller and easier to achieve is helpful, as is our remembering to praise the tiniest bits of progress. As well, I can think of few words more wonderful to share with our students than those of Nelson Mandela, when he said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
