Now, maybe more than ever these words of Deepak Chopra seem to describe what we as music teachers need to do every day: “Instead of thinking outside the box; get rid of the box.” Take a moment to reflect upon how influential a message that is for us to share with our students, by what we do and how we do it. How many boxes limit our thinking? How many boxes keep us from further growth? How many boxes have no reason to exist other than “that’s what we’ve always done?” Simply, how many boxes serve little purpose? Chopra’s advice may just be the solution to that age-old problem.
