I once had a fortune cookie that simply read: “Circumstances do not make the person; circumstances merely reveal that person to themselves.” The power of those words have long stayed with me. Maybe now more than ever we should think about what we reveal about ourselves to others, especially our students. They will surely see us rise to our current circumstances because that’s what teachers do. They will surely see us embrace the challenges of our time because that’s what teachers do. They will surely see us care about their safety and education more than is sane and logical because that’s what teachers have always done and will always do.
